Rwanda's capital is never short on good places to eat. Here we review four of the best.

One thing Kigali isn't short on is world cuisine. Here we go around the globe from Indian to Ethiopian, Italian to local. Whatever your mood you'll find something to suite your pallet.

India Khazana

Based in Kiyovu, just down the road from the Mille Collines, this restaurant is reputedly Kigali’s very best, which is reflected in the prices. Main dishes cost around FRW 5-8,000 (£5-8/$10-16) each with a range of side-dishes and starters. The menu offers everything you would expect from an Indian restaurant, from Mali Kofta to Tikka dishes and the service is impeccable. The most impressive thing about India Khazana is the decor: a covered outdoor seating area with mood lighting and a waterfall running the length of one wall. It’s also perfect for birthdays and special occasions when, with lights dimmed, the staff will serenade the special person in English, French and Swahili. Lalibela Ethiopian

Not so easy to find, this little restaurant is tucked away down a side-street near the main stadium. Take the Kimironko bus to Chez Lando and keep walking towards the stadium. The road soon forks in two by the UN building. Keep left and then turn left again at the flashing fairy lights of the Chinese restaurant. A little way down this side-street, on your right, you will see the white sign of Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant. The food here is good and a main meal is affordable at around FRW 4,000 (£4/$8). They also stock draft Mutzig and wine at around FRW 2,000 (£2/$4) per glass. The only criticism is that the service can be a bit lacking and you may find yourself going to the bar to find a waiter.

Sola Luna

Possibly Kigali’s second most attractive restaurant after India Khazana. Set in a beautiful secret garden, this Italian does the best pizza in town. You can sit out under a canopy of flowering vines or up on a platform overlooking the twinkling lights of the city. Service is generally friendly and attentive although it can get busy at weekends and it is closed on Mondays. There are a wide range of toppings, often with a topical theme such as the Kibuye or the Cyangugu. Their pasta dishes are also good but we don’t recommend the fish dishes or non-Italian food particularly. Pizzas cost around FRW 5,000 (£5/$10) and will happily feed two. To get there, take the Kimironko bus to Chez Lando, cross to the Kobil petrol station and, with that in front of you, turn right. It’s about a five minute walk down the hill on the left.

Chez Lando

You can get the Kimironko bus straight to Chez Lando from town. Knock to get off when you see a huge Kobil petrol station on your right and a giant satellite dish in front of you. This is the Kisimenti area of town, near Remera. Chez Lando is one of Kigali’s well known landmarks and it’s really good for small group meetings as they have comfortable cubbies around the main courtyard where you can tuck yourself away. The food is always very good, especially the fish brochettes and they also do lovely ice-cream. A main meal will set you back around FRW 3-4,000 (£3-4/$6-8) but watch out as it can get very crowded if there’s a football match on.
